A compact reasoning AI model from Alibaba

It matches DeepSeek-R1 and o1-preview.

Welcome back.

Alibaba’s newly released AI model is much smaller than the competition, yet somehow keeps pace with the giants.

While Google’s been making another attempt at AI-powered search.

Here is what’s been happening in AI lately.

In today’s release:

1. Alibaba launches QwQ-32B

2. Google’s AI search is here

3. OpenAI plans to release high-end AI agents

Alibaba releases QwQ-32B

Alibaba’s Qwen team has launched QwQ-32B, an open-source AI reasoning model designed for advanced tasks like math, coding, and strategic decision-making.

With only 32 billion parameters and 32,000 token context length, this model matches the performance of much larger models such as DeepSeek-R1 (671 billion parameters). However, it requires significantly fewer computational resources, making it accessible even for smaller setups.

  • High efficiency: Achieves similar performance to DeepSeek-R1 and o1-preview in AIME and MATH benchmarks.

  • Open-source access: Available via Hugging Face with an Apache 2.0 license, free for commercial and academic use.

QwQ-32B leverages reinforcement learning (RL) techniques in two stages. First optimizing for math and coding accuracy, then improving general reasoning abilities. Its efficient design means it can run on a single consumer-grade GPU, offering powerful capabilities without needing the costly infrastructure competitors typically require.

How can you use this to your advantage?

Businesses and developers can now integrate powerful AI reasoning capabilities into products at a significantly lower computational cost. QwQ-32B’s open-source availability provides opportunities for creating smarter applications in analytics, coding, and automation without heavy infrastructure investments.

Google introduces AI-only search mode

Google has launched AI Mode, a new feature that replaces traditional search results with detailed, AI summaries.

This mode is powered by an advanced version of Google's Gemini 2.0 AI model and is available to Google One AI Premium subscribers.

  • No more blue links: AI Mode removes the standard 10-link results, giving users a conversational, detailed summary instead.

  • Interactive experience: Users can continue asking follow-up questions directly from the results page, similar to the experience provided by Perplexity.

  • Source links included: Summaries reference original webpages clearly, offering transparency, again, similar to Perplexity.

Google VP Robby Stein stated that this update addresses frequent user requests for more AI-driven search experiences. This change is a significant step away from traditional searching, offering more detailed, interactive responses.

How can you use this to your advantage?

If you regularly rely on Google Search for research or quick answers, AI Mode could significantly streamline your experience by providing comprehensive, conversational results. This can save you time, allowing you to dive deeper into topics without clicking through multiple pages.

OpenAI plans to release high-end AI agents

OpenAI reportedly plans to offer specialized AI agents, charging as much as $20,000 a month for top-tier models designed for PhD-level research.

According to The Information, these AI agents will target specific tasks such as sorting sales leads or supporting complex software development projects.

Pricing tiers:

  • "High-income knowledge worker" agent: $2,000/month

  • Software developer agent: $10,000/month

  • PhD-level research agent: $20,000/month

SoftBank, one of OpenAI’s investors, has committed to spending $3 billion this year on these agent products alone. OpenAI, facing steep operational costs, sees these specialized tools as crucial for generating revenue after reporting a $5 billion loss last year.

How can you use this to your advantage?

If your business involves complex research or software engineering, these specialized agents could significantly boost productivity. Despite the high price, their ability to automate intensive tasks may help justify the cost by freeing valuable expert resources.
